Platinum producer DJ Toomp recently revealed that he is in the lab working on a solo project, following in the footsteps of the recent efforts of producers such as Timbaland and Swizz Beatz.
Like Timbaland’s 2007 release, Shock Value, Toomp’s solo album is be a mix-mesh of several genres, but says it will be different from the projects you’ve heard from his peers.
“I’m working on it right now, but it’s not gonna be just straight hip-hop. It’s gonna be a mixture of R&B and hip-hop, kinda like a Quincy Jones album,” Toomp told BallerStatus.com. “I’m not really trying to do a compilation, though. So many people have already done that.”
Surprisingly, Toomp also revealed that he has more tricks of his sleeve than just manning the boards. He said he plans to display his skills as a rapper, something he says he’s always had the ability to do.
“Oh yea, definitely,” he said with a smirk, when asked if he would be rapping on the untitled project. “I got a few other talents I’mma let loose on. I’m a real hip-hop head. I come from every realm of it — from graffiti, rapping, pop locking, DJing and now I’m doing production. I got it all in me, so I’m gonna release it on that album, definitely.” read more

…GENIUS!!!

The 911 tape of deceased rap star Chad “Pimp C” Butler, has surfaced. TMZ posted the tape of an anonymous caller at the Mondarian Hotel in Los Angeles, where Pimp C was found dead. The rapper died of an accidental overdose of promethazine and codeine on Dec. 4. He also suffered from sleep apnea, a condition where one stops breathing while asleep.

As Timbaland’s “Shock Value” goes up for five Grammy Awards, the hitmaking hip-hop producer has announced a deal with Verizon Wireless to make the first “mobile album,” which will be exclusively available to subscribers of V Cast, Verizon’s mobile entertainment service.
As Verizon’s mobile producer in residence, Timbaland will produce one song per month throughout 2008. Each month, he will work with a different artist on a track while touring the country on the Verizon Mobile Recording Studio Bus, which will also capture making-of footage for V Cast subscribers on a dedicated Timbaland channel.
Timbaland says the deal will let him reach more fans because “every place don’t get a CD [but] everybody has a mobile phone.” Plus, there’s history to be made. “Just producing a mobile album has never been done. I’m the first to ever do it,” he tells Billboard.
And while major artists have of late left major labels in bids to reach fans in new ways, Timbaland isn’t leaving Interscope, which put out “Shock Value” and distributes his Mosley Music imprint. (However, he says he is out of contract with the label to put out his solo albums.) Interscope is involved in the Verizon deal from the standpoint that Timbaland plans to work with the label’s artists for the mobile-only tracks. Whether a mobile album deal could replace a major-label deal in the future, “that’s something we’ll have to see,” Timbaland says.
Each mobile Timbaland track will be released days after it is produced. Songs will be released as a full-length download, ringtone and ringback, and will be available only through V Cast and Verizon. At the end of the year, some sort of compilation “album” will be released exclusively through Verizon, according to Ruth. Whether the music is worked to radio during the exclusive period or made available via broader distribution afterward is up to Interscope.
For his part, Timbaland says he isn’t focusing on a particular genre for the project. “I’m just going to have fun with it,” he says. “I’ll just do what comes in mind.”
The partnership kicks off today with a pre-Grammy party co-hosted by Verizon and People magazine. During the event, Timbaland will debut the first Verizon song, which features Mosley Music artist Keri Hilson. Timbaland and Hilson recorded two tracks during a three-week period last month, one of which will be introduced at the party and go mobile within a few days.
Timbaland hasn’t yet revealed what other artists he will be working with for the project, but Ruth says some of those on the party’s guest list will be involved. That roster includes fellow Mosley Music act OneRepublic, Paramore, Flo Rida, Natasha Bedingfield, Taylor Swift and Chris Cornell, who will perform.
“How I prepare for [the new album] is, I just do it, like any other album,” Timbaland says. “The only difference is it’s immediate.”

The Phoenix Suns acquired Shaquille O’Neal in a stunning, blockbuster deal that sent four-time All-Star Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to the Miami Heat.

Warner Music Group is the lead bidder after offering $25 million to purchase the catalog of Death Row Records, the bankrupt Los Angeles rap label.Founded by Marion “Suge” Knight Jr. in 1991, Death Row released works by rap icons Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur in its heyday. However, Knight and the label filed for bankruptcy in April 2006, claiming they were $137 million in debt and had $4.4 million in assets.Information about Warner Music Group’s offer was contained in a Feb. 1 filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in California, the New York Post said. Sale of the catalog, which is believed to include about 10,000 songs, has long been stalled because potential buyers weren’t sure which assets the now-shuttered label still controls. The Post said Warner Music Group is only interested in buying the catalog if it includes Dr. Dre’s album “The Chronic,” as well as unreleased tracks by Shakur. However, the properties have been at the center of separate disputes regarding royalty payments and ownership.

Rapper Pimp C’s death in a West Hollywood hotel room was accidental and the result of a combination of factors, including use of prescription medicine used to treat coughs and congestion and sleep apnea, the coroner’s office reported Monday.
The 33-year-old rapper, whose real name was Chad Lamont Butler, was found dead at the Mondrian hotel on Dec. 4.
In a statement issued Monday afternoon, the coroner’s office said Butler’s death was ruled accidental and cited “promethazine/codeine effects and other unestablished factors.”
The case report noted that the rapper had a history of sleep apnea, a chronic disorder in which breathing is briefly suspended repeatedly during sleep.
The promethazine/codeine combination is prescription medicine commonly used for the treatment of a cough and/or congestion, said Assistant Chief Ed Winter of the coroner’s office.
Butler was half of the duo UGK and considered a pioneer of southern rap.
